Tri-Expedition 2018: Long Melford -> Ipswich
We had three days of glorious blue sky sunshine as we used; pedestrian, paddle and peddle power to hike, canoe and cycle home from Long Melford over the three days of the bank holiday weekend. It was an amazing trip! Never have I seen so much encouragement and support from Scout to each other. Never have I seen so much steely determination. And never have I had such generosity from parents, helpers and leaders to support such an event – Thank you all.
Pictures of the event are here…looking at the smiles they speak volumes and have created everlasting memories…
The detail…
Four patrols made their sandwiches before they left and travelled by bus to Long Melford. The 3 younger groups were followed by adults – allowed to make mistakes along the way, whilst the oldest group – were left to get lost and find their own way to Henny Swan (which is half way between Sudbury and Bures). We then travelled by bus to base camp at Clives in Boxted, Essex where the Scouts cooked their own light weight meals, played wide games and sang scout songs around a camp fire.
Day 2 – Canoes were loaded and Andy’s team coached, guided and drowned the scouts (ok got them wet), somewhere between the four mile cruise from Henny Swan to Bures Scout camp site. We had lunch on private land with the owners permission along the way and swam in the river at the end before having showers and returning back to base camp. Dinner was mashed potato and sausages. More wide games and another camp fire.
Day 3 we packed up camp and picked up the route again from Bures Scout camp site and cycled the 20 miles back towards Ipswich. Some did slightly lesser routes depending on their age and experience of cycling. All did amazingly well and all should be proud of their achievements.
